  1. Wow – how uncomfortable it is to read about callously giving away humans who have done no wrong, but simply don’t fit with one’s lifestyle anymore. Non-vegans would think of this as a ridiculous bit of writing, because they haven’t yet made the connection that animals are ‘someone’, and not ‘something’. Nor do they seem to make the connection that disrespect and callousness don’t just stay tidily in one place, it crosses species and borders.

    1. Thanks for reading, Katrina. This year marks 400 years since the first slaves “arrived” in this country as “property,” as “human resources.” Justifying slavery and the ethnic cleansing of the indigenous populations took place simultaneously and continues to be rationalized as somehow necessary, as divinely guided, as something that just always happens in the course of a history written by settler-colonial ambition that whitewashes and disinfects their every crime. No African ever volunteered to become a slave, no “livestock” ever nodded approval at the slaughterhouse doors, millions of American Bison and all the billions of Passenger Pigeons did not volunteer for decimation or extinction.

  2. “A pretty boring way to live, actually.”
A pertinent point, Katrina. The herders’ herd behavior. And they are also the ones who do not see through the Emperor’s New Clothes.
    Critical thinking is fun.
