Civic’s Vandals

The Vandals did not need any civic values to sack Rome to the bone. They needed simply to occupy the seat of government held by a ruler who had moved into the emperor’s residence. Upon the god emperor’s orders the unruly lot stormed the legislature to seek objects worth looting. Democracy in Rome had long succumbed to decadence when the place lost its honor and meaning. As empty in value and substance as the stuff offered by the barkers who follow the pulse of a populace amused by bread, circuses and blood.

Riding the wave

On the 6th day of January: 2021 of the Common Era, a sorry crew of patriots (to use their own nomenclature) arrived — dressed as expected and looking for some heads of state to roll. Such was their role. A fragile vessel as compromised as the floundering cargo craft presently gripped in the geography of ancient Egypt, the present-day subjects casting about while followed by a plague that may as well be orchestrated by locusts. The command of the empire is as mired in the muck and as deeply imbedded as the Evergreen, a gigantic vessel presently clotting the flow of modern industry, clogged at its aorta.

Odd that the clot is located just south of the Mediterranean Sea, the central water loosely held by the hapless descendants of the Roman Empire that surrounded those waters two millennia ago. Rule of law succumbs to law and order in the instant that a heart loses its pulse. Hollow traditions are not the stuff of solid governance and discipline. They are the vacant stares of the disaffected and the politician’s crave for power and glory.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Doesn’t say much for you the people that vote these leaders. You have so many smart recent people that think rationally but instead you choose the strangest of people to the highest office.
Maybe it is because I am a spectator from far but refunding police. Having a few police shot each day? I am sure you could be doing better. Then again relative to the rest of the world you may think you are doing fine. The world is mad and all I read about is that whites are racists. Maybe this is describing something complicated for small children. I think there are a lot of amazing people that don’t deserve to be living on this planet. To them I have no words. Maybe in time the rest of us will get better.

    1. We certainly have a penchant for voting in kleptocrats, no doubt. I can think of no political animal quite as strange as the ever self-deluding Donald J. Trump. People are still lining up to offer their undying support for liars, thieves, and ne’er-do-wells. Our police departments are full of supremacists who act extrajudicially to lynch blacks at their every opportunity. The klan and their kin keep the good old boys employed with big bucks, no accountability, and with no qualifications necessary. Jim Crow never dies.
Speaking of kleptocrats, you guys seem to hold on to aging unprincipled powermongers. Something our two systems have in common. Joined at the hip is what we are. But wait, it is not just the US Empire, it’s those Marshall Islands as well 🙂

  2. There are conspiracy theories surrounding Evergreen—I don’t subscribe to any, at least I don’t think I do. There might be some lurking in the shadows that I’m not aware of that would tickle my fancy. After all, some conspiracy theories turn into conspiracy realities. Can’t think of any at the moment. Oh, but where was I? Oh yes. Evergreen, the Secret Service Code name for Hillary. It’s probably nothing.

    Good to chat again, Bill.

    1. Thanks Peter. I always look forward to our chats on major issues. Conspiracy theories seem to have invaded public discourse at every level, a too-large ship inexplicably gets stuck in a too-narrow passage. Who could have ever foreseen such a thing? It is fun to contemplate the gullibleness of those who subscribe to them. I guess that Hillary does have a lot of time available to attend to all manner of Evergreenish activity, so that might explain something. Or perhaps not?
